Details about my prize package have gone up here!
Details from the contest host: This is for everyone entering the contests, from the mini-contests we've been having to the big #TLB30 conteset. If you've already entered any of the contests, or plan to enter by the final 8/31 deadline, you'll be in the running to win these two beauties.
[Go to the site to see, but it's a Santa Cruz beach boardwalk postcard and a magnet with sand and boardwalk images.]
Straight from Santa Carla, er, Santa Cruz itself thanks to one of our lovely judges, Carla! Just some fun vampire capital souvenirs for a lucky winner. Again, all you have to do is already have entered the past mini-contest, have already entered the #TLB30 fic contest, or will enter it or the next coming mini-contest by August 31, 2017. Open internationally, and it'll end when #tlb30 ends, midnight PST on 8/31.
Good luck!
Bonus info: I have a matching magnet on my fridge, so if you want to be a weird magnet twin with me, this is your chance. (Yes, I am just this ridiculous and delightful.)

July 4 ETA: I did not realize that if you open the entry in a new tab or window, the pictures are giant! (I always just expand cut tags until I am responding to comments.) I think I have fixed that, but let me know if they still show up giant for you.
All Lost Boys, all the time post.
First, a reminder: The Lost Boys 30th Anniversary Fanfic Contest Extravaganza is still open, and you can win a signed copy of the amazing forthcoming behind-the-scenes book. I can't wait to get my hands on it, the sneak peeks have been amazing. There are some mini-giveaways going on at the same time, including one that will have a prize I picked up in Santa Cruz, so you should really check it out and enter ASAP.
Second, in a nice stroke of luck + good timing, I ended up in Santa Cruz in time for the official celebration of the 30th anniversary, even though it technically isn't until July. There was an entire day of Lost Boys adventures, though it was so much better attended than anyone expected that it was nearly impossible to grab any of the giveaways or even find things, but it was an excellent time. BFF and her husband had never been to Santa Cruz before, J and I first went there together more than a decade ago, and it is one of my favorite places. We spent three days there (and more days nearby, though we didn't always go down into Santa Cruz proper), and had a ton of fun.
The official celebration day included a screening of The Lost Boys on the beach, right where parts of it had been filmed, and it was GREAT. Cold as anything, of course; it's generally pretty cool in that part of California this time of year, but especially at night, with the wind coming off the water. I brought layers with me, and once I'd added them all, I wished I'd also brought a blanket. We ate vampire-repelling garlic fries and fish, saw a billion people there to celebrate the movie (more than 7500 showed up, last count I saw), and enjoyed the hell out of a movie we love. (Well, BFF and I love it, and in fact met because of it. J and BFF's husband, not quite as fond.)
There was time on the 1911 Loof Carousel and BFF and Mr BFF went up on the Sky Glider, we did some shopping and played games, and they took a ton of pictures. (I took a few, but I was having so much fun watching them experience it for the first time, I didn't take as many as I probably should have.) (Also, I miss the days when I could ride roller coasters. Damn vertigo.)
The whole trip was great, but Santa Cruz was the best. Excellent food (hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant had the best lengua tacos I've ever eaten), excellent stores (FABULOUS used book and record store), and we ruined BFF and Mr BFF on ice cream forever (we took them to Cold Stone Creamery).
I've loved the Lost Boys for a long, long time; I've written over 250k words of fic, the most recent for Yuletide 2016 (Straight On 'Til Morning and Comes the Night, Comes the Shadows.) This fandom brought me far more than I gave it: friends for life, a shit ton of writing experience, grand adventures, gorgeous art, a fabulous time meeting my favorite vampire, Billy Wirth -- I can't thank the movie and the fandom enough for all it gave me.
I hope, for those of you who love the movie in your own way, you'll considering entering the contest. Come talk to me about this ridiculous vampire horror comedy filled with gushing blood, big hair, sequins, and 80s fashion. We're going for a ride, man.

In addition to this being the 20th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which I still cannot believe), it is the 30th anniversary of The Lost Boys, which was my second fandom, and the other fandom that really changed my life. (I've loved fandoms since, but BtVS and LB are the two that had a direct, long-lasting, biggest impact on my life, the people I love, and the woman I've become.) Later this year, I'm off to Santa Cruz, where the movie was filmed (it became Santa Carla in the movie, the murder capital of the world, FITTING I KNOW), and I can't wait to go back.
There's also an amazing behind-the-scenes book due out this fall, and I can't wait to read it and see all the pictures. It's going to be so great.
And to celebrate both those things, an old fandom friend of mine is running the Lost Boys 30th Anniversary Fanfic Contest Extravaganza, and I hope you Lost Boys fans will participate. You may even know one of the judges. (You definitely know one of the judges.)
Here's what Donna has to say:
Thirty years ago, on July 31st, an epically awesome, mullet-filled movie called The Lost Boys, was released. Starring Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Jami Gertz, and for the first time on screen the two Coreys, Haim and Feldman, The Lost Boys changed the vampire scene forever.
Now in honor of the movie, Paul Davis, who brought you BEWARE THE MOON, a behind-the-scenes movie book for American Werewolf in London, is bringing his magic to the world of The Lost Boys. A full color, 200-page book complete with cast and crew interviews, a ton of never-before-seen images from the set, and a scene-by-scene recreation of all deleted scenes, will be available in a limited release this summer just in time for the anniversary.
So what's going on here? From now until the end of summer you'll find a whole slew of stuff in this book, from pre-order information to fanfic recs, character bios, mini-contests that'll stretch your artistic fingers, fan site highlights, and, of course, the big shebang: the fanfic contest. Over the next few months you'll interact with other Lost Boys fans and have the chance to win awesome prizes, from sets of press kit photos from the movie, TLB-inspired lip balm, some books that were influenced by the movie, and a copy of Paul's book!
So step inside, if you dare. Don't worry. That smell is just the ocean air . . .

Still some open topics, if you want to claim them.
1: Talk about the first time you watched your favorite movie.
Lilo & Stitch is my favorite movie, and has been since it released, but Lost Boys was my favorite movie before that, and the two run pretty neck and neck, so I'll talk about both.
Lost Boys
I actually came to Lost Boys later than most people I know in its fandom; I didn't watch it until the summer after my senior year of high school, when most people I know watched it as kids or in their early teens. It was already considered a cult classic when I first watched it, and I immediately fell in love.
I worked long hours that summer, at a drive-in restaurant, and I watched it late one night after getting home from work. It must have been an edited for tv version, because I didn't own it back then, but I can't actually remember what was (or might have been, I guess) edited. I bought my own copy pretty much immediately so I could rewatch, and started writing fic for it not long after finding the mailing list.
I love the flashy vampires on motorcycles, way too cool for life, forever young and full of teenage hormones and doing ridiculous things just because they can. I love a chosen family, and how it exists on both sides in the movie, and how sibling bonds can be so strong. I love the soundtrack and the 80s fashions and Santa Cruz as the Murder Capital of the World.
I love this movie, and these characters, and how the fandom gives them so much life.
Lilo & Stitch
Oh, hello, movie of my heart.
I have a hard time remembering the first time I watched this, because I watched it a billion times my undergrad senior year. I know I saw it in the theater, probably with J (he'd just moved back to Missouri from Hawaii, in part because of me), and I know it broke my heart right open. Siblings and chosen families and Lilo is such a strange, wonderful kid, and Nani is trying so damn hard, and Stitch. I have an epic Stitch collection, because Stitch is the greatest.

Saw this, couldn't resist plugging in some of my favorite characters, loved the winner, so I'm posting. This doesn't make me want to write a Hunger Games fusion, but it does make me want to write something with mixed characters and lots of death.

Clearly, I'm carrying the December Talking Meme well into 2015, so if you want to leave any prompts, feel free to do so here or on the Master List.
Prompt by
havocthecat: I'm on a Lost Boys kick lately, so what's your ideal post-movie scenario? Since The Tribe and The Thirst did not really deliver anything quality with regards to that.
The nostalgia is strong with this prompt. The Lost Boys was my second online fandom, and remains one of my favorites, both for the movie and the fandom itself, and because it brought me so many of my favorite people. I'm still friends with a bunch of people I met in early online Buffy fandom, but my bff came from Lost Boys, and we have a group of friends who are AMAZING. Creative and loyal and smart and wonderful.
I don't really have an ideal post-movie scenario. It really depends on what I've been thinking about most recently. Because I wrote Temptation, Like a Drum for Yuletide, my current favorite post-movie scenario veers far into fix-it fic, vampires surviving the movie, Star staying a half-vampire and learning to control the power that comes from walking between two worlds. Whether only David survives (horn not wood) or they all survive varies. Who makes Star a half-vampire again varies. Whether Michael becomes a vampire again varies. The core of it is created vampire family, Santa Carla, and Star maneuvering her worlds.
Sometimes I love stories about Star and Laddie learning to be human again, about the Emersons navigating a world in which they know monsters are real. The Frog brothers all grown up, hunting things, saving people. Lucy building a safe space for her boys in a city she knows is monstrous and corrupt.
Still really want to read and/or write a story about the werewolves of Santa Carla.

Nothing prompted for day 16. Day 17 prompted by
Well isn't this an interesting question. This varies depending on when I'm thinking about it, but right now, in no particular order, here are five fictional places I would like to visit:
o Tortall, from the Tortall series by Tamora Pierce
I'm not really a fan of feudal systems in general, but omg, how much do I want to be a lady knight? SO MUCH. Kel, character of my heart, has been an inspiration from the first moment I started reading her story. (I read Alanna's story and Daine's story before hers, and enjoyed the hell out of both of them, but Kel's story, The Protector of the Small, is the greatest ever. EVER.) There's magic and people who can talk to animals and immortal creatures including dragons and lady knights are becoming a thing again and SO MUCH YES.
(Thankfully, the magic means a lot of the downside to medieval life doesn't exist.)
o Santa Carla, from The Lost Boys
This is basically cheating, because Santa Cruz feels so, so close to Santa Carla already, just minus the supernatural creatures (...or is it), and I've spent plenty of time in Santa Cruz. But it's such a great setting: rock and roll, ocean, flashing lights, loud games, wild rides
Right up until I became vamp chow, but, you know, whatever.
o Cedar Ridge territory, from the Raised by Wolves series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Speaking of werewolves, this is my favorite YA werewolf series, in part because it is so very much about chosen family and humans + werewolves holding territory together. I want to visit and watch them run and just -- werewolves, man. Werewolves.
o Space, the Final Frontier, from Star Trek: The Next Generation
So much space. All space, all the time. I want to peacefully meet new people and see new places and not at all try to colonize them, so probably I should have chosen another space setting (Pitch Black but not that particular planet! Firefly! etc.), but I imprinted on ST:TNG young. I want to have all the adventures in space and hang out with Worf and warp speed, people, warp speed.
o New New York and beyond, from Futurama
Space + technology + awesome snark + robots. Bring me there immediately. Immediately.
(I don't talk about it often around here, but I love space and stars and flights of imagination and the future and, oh, I wish, I wish, I wish I could visit other planets, other solar systems, I want to climb into a space craft and take the most epic road trip (space trip) ever.)

As soon as I saw a tiny little thumbnail of this, I said to myself, That's Lost Boys artwork, and so it is. Even when I couldn't read the text or really make out the faces or anything. You'd think that movie was an important part of my formation as a writer or something.
Today, while relaxing and reading a book, I sat through Shrek twice. In a row. It was a gorgeous, warm, lazy Saturday.

Oh, fandom.
In case you didn't know, this summer a straight-to-dvd sequel to The Lost Boys releases. There has been some contention about it over at the lostcave.net forums, and now that it's getting close to the drop date, people are coming out of the woodwork.
This means the mods at the forum are going to be working overtime to make sure LostCave.net and the forum remain open and friendly to all fans. As one of those mods, it is both an exciting time (who knew, ten years ago, that Sarah and I would be doing these things we do) and a frustrating time. Because I have my own opinions about the sequel, but they don't matter; the important part is making sure everyone feels welcome.
LB fandom has been extraordinarily lucky. For decades we've had no big fandom wars. Sarah, Aly, and I are doing our parts to make sure we keep up that track record during this new addition to the fandom.

Even though I know I should sleep (four hours in the past forty-eight? Fifty something? I don't know anymore), I'm not all that tired. I am going to go lie down in a moment, but first I had to marvel at this.
I am currently writing LB fic with a movie on in the background and a can of diet Dr. Pepper at my right hand. Add a cigarette and warmer weather, and I'm suddenly reliving my undergrad experience. Freaky.
Of course, back then the movies I watched were on VHS. And I was in a dorm room, so I could smoke inside. And I probably wouldn't be at home writing at this point in time, but later, after the bars closed, oh yes. I wouldn't be working with a cowriter, either, but I would be writing about most of these characters. It's a strange world.
There are times when I really, really miss writing The Protector Series. It was good to always know where I was going with the a series.

Lost Boys: The Tribe trailer
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Oh, that's going to be a steaming pile of shit, isn't it? And yet odds are good I'll be in the theater, possibly drunk, dying of laughter. Kind of like I am now, actually.
( spoilers for the trailerCollapse )
You know, David and Michael watch over my DVD collection (when, exactly, are they going to put out the rest of the gang in action figure form?) and neither of them look too pleased. I am still laughing myself.

While writing prompts for
smallfandomfest, I think I just inspired myself. Which is pretty much the last thing I needed to do, a new story to start, especially after
nikitangel convinced me to expand the Letty-as-Slayer section of her birthday fic. (Which, I still have to finish the birthday fic itself.)
However, The Lost Boys, Star/Maria, human contact just made me go, "Oh, I really want to write that."
So we'll see.
(In other news, I am feeling very blah right now. WisCon and the trip to see
nikitangel can't come soon enough. I need the energy of being around my friends again, I think.)
(In other, other news, my sister bought her very first comic books on Saturday, while I was with her encouraging her. So now I've read Buffy season eight issues one and two. I'm not really a huge fan so far.)

Awhile ago I posted a link to a very funny review of that great 80s vampire movie, The Lost Boys. When I did, I said I would give a prize to anyone who guessed where I squeaked from laughter.
Unfortunately, I've since forgotten what that part was, though
thestalkycop may remember, because I was talking to her when I did it, and she has this uncanny knack for remembering everything silly I do.
I do know that, when everyone made their guesses, no one got it(1).
I reread it again, and have a new squeak moment, so I'll tell you that instead.
( Can you really spoil a review of a movie over a decade old?Collapse )
However, I really appreciate you guys playing, so if
santacarlagypsy,
invisionary,
schizoauthoress, and
buffyfan30 will give me a prompt, a fandom, characters, theme, whatever, I'll either write a short story for them or make them some sort of art. (
nikitangel, too, because she found me fabulous icons from the movie.)
On a similar topic, today Sarah and I were talking about how the director called all the male vampires beautiful. (Well, with the exception of Laddie, I suppose.) Neither of us agree with that assessment, and as we each have our favorites, that isn't us being difficult.
In the rush to leave work before I was iced in for the day, I didn't save the conversation, but we both came up with something a little like this.
Why the Vampires in The Lost Boys Aren't Actually Beautiful, But Are ...:
David: Not beautiful. Icily attractive in the beginning and sweetly cute at the end, but not beautiful.
Paul: Not beautiful. His attractiveness grows on you, much like a fungus. Pot head attractive.
Marko: Not beautiful. Cherubic and cute.
Dwayne: The closest to beautiful, but still not. He's more comely than beautiful.
Michael: (Sarah and I actually didn't talk about Michael, he's a nonentity in many of our conversations about the movie.) Not beautiful. Wanna-be rebel attractive, sort of, but the big hair kind of takes away from it.
Speaking of the big hair, if you have never read Sarah's "The Secret Diaries of the Lost Boys" you are really missing out on the hair jokes.
1. How convenient for me, eh?

The Lost Boys, that cheesy, wonderful eighties vampire movie, was not my first fandom, nor is it the one in which I'm currently the most active. However, it's probably the one I hold closest to my heart, the one I enjoyed the most.
However, I believe if you love something you enjoy it, you experience it often, you bask in the pleasure it brings you--and you mock it. You mock it until you laugh so hard you can't breathe, keep laughing, and then squeak(1). With that in mind, I bring you this.
I-Mockery.com brings you The Lost Boys.
(1) If you can guess(2) where I squeaked, I'll give you a prize of some sort.
(2) Sarah, you are exempt because I told(3) you.
(3) However, if someone really wants a prize from me, I'm sure she could be bribed into telling.

Advice to characters in my fandom
( Dr. Carla Is In Session*Collapse )
I'm on and off my computer tonight, but if you want to give me prompts, either drabbles to write or that whole Five Things list meme (five things fill-in-the-blank did/likes/hates/ate/etc.) or just something you'd like to see me write you, feel free. I'm looking for inspiration this weekend.
aphrodite_mine, tomorrow, during the day, will you be online?
* I almost said Dr. Carla Is In The House, but thanks to fandom, that sounded a little too perverted for me. I'm not fan enough of House to want to, you know, be in him.

No time before bed, because am shattered!
But. I had a bad day at work (which hey, I suddenly realize was like fandom discussions coming alive for me, literally, because it was all "I am not smart enough because I am a woman and do not have a penis and obviously know nothing about construction or automobiles" bad stuff, which I have already ranted about elsewhere and will not rant about here any more than I just did and don't hate me because I don't have a dick, okay?) and I want to make a list of good things. So. Good things.
Good Things on Tuesday:
+ Supernatural Squee. Saw all the twists coming like a mile off, but still I squee. And I am in love with Dean. Oh yeah.
+ Received the CD from
crimson_keys. We are doing our own personal fic exchange for Christmas (because she is the best adopted fannish sister in the whole world, she is writing me a The Lost Boys/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory crossover and I didn't even have to ASK she just started writing it [which means I'd better rent the new version, so I am all up to date, yay netflix]) and she sent me music to inspire me. (Her request of me was to write a Sprite/Marko story; Sprite is an original character from my "The Protector Series" a long set of stories about The Lost Boys.) I think I have found the base song for the story, though I am waiting to make a decision until I a) listen to the rest of the CD (because I am on #5 of 19) and b) get the actual track listing so I can look up lyrics. However it has a specific line which caught my attention: "scorching the blood in my vampire heart"
+ Interesting, intelligent, thought-provoking conversation even in the middle of fights and anger and unnessary accusations. This is the part of fandom I like, when people say things which make me both want to respond and feel completely out of my league when it comes to saying something equally intelligent, etc. back.
+ I'm reading The Ice Limit by Preston and Child. It is one of the few books of theirs I haven't read, and I picked up a first edition at a local used bookstore awhile back. So far it's interesting. I prefer the Pendergast books, but I think this will be good too.
+ While I didn't do NaNo exactly, because I'm the middle of rewriting some original fiction, I did set myself a goal of 50,000 words this month, mostly because I have to do what
thestalkycop does. It's important. As of last night, I've reached my goal, and actually as of today I'm at 53,000+ so I am both pleased and excited. Also a little intimidated, because now I have to keep doing this, since I know I can.
+ I'm about to go crawl into my toasty bed and watch Family Guy before I sleep. Nice.

Fanfic Author Appreciation Week
Fanfic Author Appreciation Week: You post a fave author for each day, March 6 through the 13. Tell why you picked them, give some links to their fic, say why you love them, their work, why they need more appreciation, and just wax poetic about your favorite authors for the entire week.
I've decided to alternate between my other fandoms and my main fandom. Tonight's rec will be in The Lost Boys, which was the second fandom I ever joined and is the one I've been most active in. If you don't know, The Lost Boys is a vampire movie from 1987 that mixes horror with humor. It is the story of Sam and Michael Emerson, who move with their mother, Lucy, to Santa Carla, California (based on and filmed in the real town of Santa Cruz, California) after their parents divorce. Sam, the younger brother, immediately falls in with two young men, Edgar and Alan Frog, who claim the town is overrun with vampires. Michael, on the other hand, immediately falls for the gypsy-like Star and stumbles into the middle of the vampire problem.
The main site for the Lost Boys fandom is The Lost Cave, formerly run by Sammy and now run by
thestalkycop. It houses quite a bit of fanfiction, movie pictures, quotes, bloopers, discussion, and other fun things.
My site, Of Luv and Blood, is probably the largest host of fanfiction for The Lost Boys (along with all of my writings in various fandoms), but I'm moving the fiction over to The Lost Cave slowly but surely.
The Lost Cave mailing list is for discussion about the movie and welcomes off topic posts. It was started by Sammy, and I am the current list owner. The Lost Boys Fanfiction: Stories from the Lost Cave is the fiction mailing list and does not welcome off topic posts. It was created and is still maintained by Sammy, who also puts in a lot of work to run the Lost Boys Fiction awards.
Tonight's author is Bat (
das_hydra. Her website is Kessho.
Bat has a number of different Lost Boy stories, but my two favorite are her epic work and the Audioslave series.
The Audioslave Series is a collection of short stories written to the songs from Audioslave's self titled album. Though it is not finished yet, it tells a story of how the Lost Boys came to exist. Bat ties in the lyrics and the obvious Peter Pan myth deftly. The stories are quick, sharp, and flow very well.
Her epic story is To the Shock of Miss Louise. Bat's summary: What if the movie wasn't just fantasy, but was based in truth?
The story presupposes that the Lost Boys are a vampire pack who find a mortal to write their story into a movie. The details are magnificent and Ruby, as the writer in the story, is witty and sarcastic, but still loveable and a well-rounded character. The characterization of the vampires is believable and strong. The story goes so far beyond that basic idea of fiction in reality in fiction and for fifty chapters carries the reader on a whirlwind adventure.

I know some of you lost boys writers read this journal. I'm looking for people to join me in the Remix Redux challenge that
musesfool runs. This is a link to the information and sign-ups. It closes tomorrow, so if you want to join in, and you know you do because it will be fun, get over there and sign up.

My best friend cum stalker has taken over the main website for my main fandom (The Lost Cave, if you were curious), and I'm working on uploading my stories to the shiny! new! automated archive. This is vaguely depressing, and I doubt I'd do it if she wasn't the one running the site, now.
I look back over the stories as I post them, and oh man, I suck. Suck like the suckingest thing to ever suck, because I feel a badly written comparison will best show just how much I suck. And it's not that I have such high expectations of my writing in the first place; I hated the stories as soon as they were completed, some of them while I wrote them, but because of the encouragement of some truly crazy people, I posted them, and continue to let them be on the net. And I'm not looking for comments that praise my writing, I'm just saying that it's strange to go back and read what you once wrote, or at least it is to me.
The plots are still interesting, for the most part, but the writing is horrible, so stilted and jerky. And I don't necessarily mind this, except for when I mourn it in my own head, but then I look at what I'm writing now, and I fear soon I'll feel the same about it. And I actually like much of what I'm writing now. And that thought scares me.
I'm thinking about taking down my website, too. I don't have the time to give it proper attention these days, and now that The Lost Cave hosts all ratings of fiction, there is no real reason for Of Luv and Blood. I would like a site just for my stories, and I think Sarah has offered to make one for me, but I really think it's time for Of Luv and Blood to come down. There are a number of wonderful stories on it, but I think they would be better hosted at The Lost Cave. I just don't know.
One thing is clear; I do need a site just for my fiction, in all the fandoms, and I need it soon. In fact, I need to round up my stories and figure out what I can do for the remix/redux before it starts, this year. I'm still looking for Lost Boys writers. Off the top of my head, I need to contact Bat (to make sure she still wants to do it), Ziggy, Sarah, Keya, and maybe Raeann, just to see if they'd be interested. Tomorrow, because I should probably try to sleep soon, now.
