Fandom: Girl Meets World 1x01 - 1x05

Trying out potential Yuletide fandoms. First up, Girl Meets World.

1x01

Ok, I already love Maya with all the burning love of a thousand suns. She's snarky and adorable and delightful. And Riley is such a cutie pie. I started shipping them before the credits even rolled.

Corey and Topanga! Still adorable dorks.

Farkle is creeeeeeeeeeeepy. And why in the world would Corey let him talk about the girls like that in front of the classroom? So weird, so not funny, so uncomfortable. Ugh.

Maya trying to take back their nights with no homework, more freedom is adorable. As is Riley trying to push back against the expectations of her parents (Corey in particular).

I'm also intrigued with the idea that it's possible that Corey and Topanga are parents that have forgotten what they were like as kids, or at least try to protect their kids from what they were like as kids. I'm running into this with my friends who have kids (and one of my sisters), as their kids get to be teenagers, and I remember what we were like as teenagers, and then have to deal with the hypocrisy of their parents trying to pretend they weren't like that as teenagers. It's a weird mix of loyalty vs truly believing that teens need freedom to make their own choices and mistakes.

... honestly kind of creeped out that Corey basically stalks his daughter in the cafeteria.

While I zero percent believe Farkle was able to sneak sparklers into that school, Maya's homework burning fire was both adorable and interesting storytelling. Though I'm still not sure why Farkle doesn't get punished for bringing and lighting the sparklers in the first place.

"a friend helps another friend out of trouble, not into it"

DID YOU FORGET EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN BOY MEETS WORLD, COREY?

"if this is my world now, the first person I want in it is you"

OH GOD MY HEART. My heart, you guys, my heart.

This show is cheesy as fuck, but adorable.

Aaaaaaah, the Mr Feeney cameo actually made me tear up a little. Nostalgia!

1x02 "Girl Meets Boy"

Oh, great, the "technology means you don't connect" episode. This grossed me out back in the 2000s, it grosses me out now. Technology can help us connect, help us be friends, help us stay in touch, help us create together. Thank you, Lucas, for bringing up that point.

A billion times more Miss Myzell, please.

... why did Maya and Riley switch seats?

Farkle continues to be terribly creepy. A billion times less Farkle, please.

Also pretty sure that a teacher can't actually collect cell phones for any real length of time.

Oh, man, that library is super creepy. I love it. I suddenly want a ghost story with them. Girl Meets World meets Scooby Doo.

Maya's surprise art skills are fabulous.

UGH RILEY AND LUCAS BONDING OVER HIS HORSE SOPHIA FOALING IS JUST ADORABLE.

Corey giving Maya colored pencils and asking her to make him a picture of anything beautiful that happens with Riley is fucking adorable.

1x03 Girl Meets Sneak Attack

... Mr Googly is CREEPY AS HELL WHAT EVEN IS THAT THING?

"I don't want him taken away from us."

Well now.

Oh dear god, Farkle is going to give flirting lessons. This is going to go so, so wrong. Though I do love that he says he wants them both to be happy. That's pretty sweet.

1x04 Girl Meets Father

Ahahahahaha, I love how Lucas and Maya interact. She tries so hard to get to him, and he's just so casual and chill and fun. I love it, I love it, I love it.

... I'm not sure I ever had a history class focus on Darwin. Huh.

Maya has a cotton candy machine in her locker? USEFUL.

Seriously love that Riley and Maya are the two most important girls in Corey's life. I love how he loves his daughters best friend. Chosen faaaaaaaaaaamily. Though it is a little weird that he's her teacher and not, you know, actually acting like a teacher, but ok, I will let it go.

And then he comes back and fixes it. THIS SHOW. Maya is a part of their family. I love them SO MUCH. SO MUCH.

Ahahahahaha, Lucas wore a cowboy hat just to keep the game with Maya going. I LOVE THEIR FRIENDSHIP SO MUCH.

1x05 Girl Meets the Truth

This ended up being adorable, even though I could still do without so much Farkle.

Verdict after five episodes: adorable, I'll definitely keep watching, and yeah, I'm thinking Yuletide.

I finally got Netflix (I really need some vacation) and I read your first few sentences and got inspired to start with Girl Meets World. I just watched the opening scene and yup, <3!

Ugh, so with you on Episode 1. Why in the year of our lord two thousand and fifteen do we still have creepy boys and creepy dads as acceptable "comic relief"?

And so much yes to

> "a friend helps another friend out of trouble, not into it"
> DID YOU FORGET EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN BOY MEETS WORLD, COREY?

I'm not convinced the show is smart enough to be consciously doing the whole "Corey and Topanga are parents that have forgotten what they were like as kids, or at least try to protect their kids from what they were like as kids" but yeah, truth that IRL parents often do that.

Right? There are moments when he's a pretty fun character, too, except so, so, so often there is just CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY and it's played off as comedy or, I fear, supposed to be funny and sweet, and I just have a terrible NO NO HELL NO reaction to it.

This is probably true. I'm not even sure if I want the show to be consciously doing that, because I find it so frustrating in real life that making it a conscious choice in fiction doesn't actually stop any of my frustration. I just wanted this show to be true to its predecessor!

1.02 "Girl Meets Boy"
Yup, hate this trope, still so not into Farkle and Corey. (Though I did laugh at Topanga's "Please don't make your father right.")

I'm loving the hints at Maya's story -- I know it's totally an old trope, the disadvantaged kid from the other side of the tracks who acts out but has a heart of gold (okay wow, it's SO Shawn ... I hadn't realized how much until I wrote it out just now) but her "I don't have anyone to help me with my homework at night" last episode was so poignant, and her "I don't have that kind of phone, so now it feels like we're even" this episode was really well-done. And yup, still not into paranoid!dad trope, but "My motives are entirely selfish" / "I'm not entirely sure they are, Mr. Matthews" <3

YES. At first I was a little unsure about it, because it's such a common trope, but then it clicked that Maya is the Shawn. Plus I love her even if they write her with all the tropes, so I'm already completely invested in her story.

The bit about no one helping her with her homework and those lines at the end with Corey -- MY HEART.

Yeah, I got in the first episode that Maya's the Shawn 'cause of your calling out the hypocrisy of "a friend helps another friend out of trouble, not into it," but I hadn't realized until I was writing it out that they weren't just being like, "See, Maya's the ~bad influence character like Shawn was on the original, and don't we get points for the fact that we gave her blonde hair and the Good character dark hair rather than being so stereotypical and doing it the other way around?" but that they were also mirroring the class divide issue and, as you point out with found family stuff, those dynamics as well.

1.03 "Girl Meets Sneak Attack"
WHY IS FARKLE ONE OF RILEY'S FRIENDS?!

Corey, you hate technology for communicating, but you watch TV at breakfast? Oh, because you desperately want your kids to stay kids. So not into this.

"I wish the world was just me and you."

This show is so bad, but props to the kid playing Lucas for conveying (a) he was totally not into Missy in a dating way, and (b) he was totally charmed by Riley even when she had her finger up his nose.

The name cards cracked me up.

"If my friends are in it, then it's for me." Okay, Farkle, when you're not being hella obnoxious and/or creepy, you're actually a good kid.

*eyeroll* at Pearl Harbor propaganda

I think I'm too old to be watching this show, because at the end I wondered if Missy was a sexual abuse survivor who was coping by hyper-sexualizing. (Obviously there are plenty of other ways to read the text, but.)

I can see that. I'm hoping there's no way the show realizes that's one way to interpret her, because while I will keep watching (so invested in Maya and her friendship with Riley and Riley's family), this is not the show I actually trust to handle a story like that.

Yeah, I definitely don't trust this show to do a Serious Business after-school-special of that level. I think the show doesn't have deep enough thinking for that to occur to it, so I'm not worried that it will try that with that plotline at least (especially since Missy seems to have been dropped as a one-off character ... I mean, I haven't been looking closely at the classroom shots, but I don't think the actress recurs).

1.04 "Girl Meets Father"
"I have to be able to talk to you." brb, sobbing irl

(And yes, what you said about Lucas and Maya. And oh tv, where history teachers assign papers on Darwin so we can have a metaphor for the episode.)

Re: 1.04 "Girl Meets Father"
YES RIGHT. There is so much cheese, and then there are these little moments where I'm sitting here all teary because what it got right was true all the way to the emotions. More of that, please.

Haven't seen this yet, so I'm not sure how long the teacher kept the cell phone. But at my school, if I were to confiscate a phone (or any other electronic device) I am supposed to turn it in to a secretary who keeps track of how often a kid has had their phone taken away. At some level (I think the third time but don't quote me) parents have to come get the phone and beyond that the school can keep it until the last day of school.

Huh, that's interesting. In the show, he kept them for potentially days, though maybe only as short as one day, but in a way that felt very much like because he's the actual dad to one of the students, he can act like a dad to all the students.
